ABOUT ME
Hello! I'm Mairi Eyres. I'm a patient, empathetic tutor with a first-class BA and MSci in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, specialising in chemistry.
I've tutored students at GCSE, A Level, and taught first and second year undergraduates at Cambridge University. The breadth and depth of my chemistry knowledge allows me to approach the A Level course from many different perspectives.
I’ve helped students achieve top grades for competitive degrees like medicine, veterinary science and engineering, as well as supporting those feeling overwhelmed by the step up from GCSE. Whether you're aiming for an A/A* or want to build a solid foundation, I tailor my approach to help each student reach their potential.
I specialise in tutoring OCR A and AQA chemistry - but feel free to get in touch if you're studying a different exam board and I'll see what I can do to help. My Approach
1. Revealing knowledge gaps
I believe making students comfortable enough to reveal the gaps in their understanding is a highly important quality in a teacher, and one that I always strive to achieve. In my experience, the best teachers are not only knowledgeable, but also kind.
2. Building genuine understanding
Many chemistry teachers simply tell students to memorise huge amounts of information, without ever teaching them the underlying principles. My background allows me to provide a solid understanding of what's really going on - making chemistry both easier and more enjoyable.
3. Practising exam questions
I get students answering exam questions from day one. This builds exam technique into their weekly practice rather than it coming as a shock at the end of the year. The more familiar students are with question styles and techniques, the more confident they become in topic tests and ultimately the final exams.
HOw it works
It all starts with a free 15-minute consultation over zoom. You'll tell me what you want to get out of these sessions and I'll tell you more about my approach. We'll discuss things like the topics you're struggling with, your availability and the number of sessions you'll be looking for each week.
Next, we'll book in our first lesson. My tutoring is carried out online using password-protected zoom meetings. I use a digital whiteboard and stylus so we can easily work through problems together.
After the session, I'll write a short report summarising what we did. This will help you track your progress so you can see how you're improving.
Each week, I'll also set a small piece of homework to help you consolidate what we covered in the lesson.
