ABOUT ME
Hello! I'm Mairi Eyres. I'm a patient, empathetic tutor with a strong academic track-record. I have a first-class BA and MSci in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, specialising in Chemistry.

I've tutored chemistry students at GCSE and A Level, and taught first and second year undergraduates at Cambridge University. The breadth and depth of my chemistry knowledge allows me to approach the A Level course from many different perspectives. I enjoy stretching outstanding students as well as finding ways to make chemistry easier and more engaging for those not yet reaching their full potential.
I believe making students comfortable enough to reveal the gaps in their understanding is a highly important quality in a teacher, and one that I always strive to achieve. In my experience, the best teachers are not only knowledgeable, but also kind.

TESTIMONIALS
"Mairi is a fantastic tutor, capable and patient throughout our lessons. I am studying an intensive A level in chemistry, a course that goes at a swift pace, and Mairi has helped me consolidate and practice the topics raised in my college classes. She is always prepared for our lessons, willing to explain the nuances of concepts, and maintains excellent email contact."

Eva, A Level chemistry student
"In our daughter’s words ‘I went from stressed and confused to feeling much more confident and prepared for my exams’. Our daughter has found Mairi’s lessons extremely helpful and enjoyable. She said that Mairi is very patient and friendly. Lessons were personalised and covered whatever she chose, including: exam practice, specific topics, homework, preparing for end-of-topic tests, going over things she found difficult in class and completed school tests. She set tailored homework to practice what was covered in the lesson, which is marked in the next session. She gave invaluable advice with writing the personal statement for university entry. We highly recommend Mairi’s excellent tutoring."

Tom and Louise, parents of an A Level student
"I was Mairi’s supervisor throughout her undergraduate degree at Cambridge University. She is very friendly, patient, calm and understanding, as well as being efficient and reliable. She has a first-class knowledge of degree level chemistry, and did an excellent job at the recent Cambridge Sutton Trust Summer School in guiding a group of year 12 students through some challenging and unfamiliar concepts of upper sixth and undergraduate level chemistry. I would not hesitate to recommend her."

Dr. S. Smith, Pembroke College, Cambridge
"I used Mairi for the whole of year 13. I needed support to increase my A level grade as I felt I was struggling to achieve the grade I needed to get into the university of my choice. Mairi was very approachable and knowledgeable about the subject, I found her way of teaching very flexible around what I needed support with at the time. She helped me to understand the different topics I was studying at school which in turn increased my confidence in lessons. If I had questions about a topic between tutor sessions she was always very helpful in answering my emails. I would highly recommend Mairi as a tutor."

Nicola, A Level chemistry student
"We found Mairi to be an absolutely wonderful support for our daughter studying for A level chemistry. Mairi is dedicated, punctual, organised, very focused and at the top of her game with her knowledge of chemistry. We cannot recommend her more highly as an A level Chemistry tutor."

Sarah, parent of an A Level student
"Mairi has been an amazing tutor during my A Level chemistry. She has tutored me for about 7 months and throughout these 7 months I feel much more confident in chemistry and can now achieve consistently high Bs (from Ds). Her lessons are purely based off of things I suggest and by the end of our session I feel much more knowledgable on the topic, not just the content but also how to answer exam questions. Mairi is also incredibly kind and patient and explains things in a way that is simple and easier to understand. "

Maddie, A Level chemistry student
"My daughter was recommended Mairi by a friend who found her tutor support very helpful. We had looked at other tutors, but during the trial sessions my daughter didn't gel with their style of tutoring. From the outset with Mairi my daughter was engaged and enthusiastic for the next tutoring sessions. She continued the enthusiasm into her chemistry classes at school and gained confidence in her own ability which I am sure will be reflected in her final exam grades this summer. I would highly recommend Mairi as a tutor, without her support my daughter would not have developed her confidence and enjoyed her chemistry class at school as much as she has."

HOw it works
It all starts with a free 15-minute consultation over zoom. You'll tell me what you want to get out of these sessions and I'll tell you more about my approach. We'll discuss things like the topics you're struggling with, your availability and the number of sessions you'll be looking for each week.

Next, we'll book in our first session! My tutoring is carried out online using password-protected zoom meetings. I use a digital whiteboard and stylus so we can easily work through problems together.

After the session, I'll write a short report summarising what we did. This will help you track your progress so you can see how you're improving. Each week, I'll also set a small piece of homework - nothing too strenuous but the idea is it will help you consolidate what we covered in the session.
PRICES
My tutoring sessions are £40/hour.

You can either pay weekly or as a block of sessions in advance.
